Joined the Board and was appointed Chairman in October 1998. He joined GKN plc in 1970 and was appointed Group Finance Director in 1982, Group Managing Director in 1987 and then Chairman and Chief Executive in 1988 before becoming non-executive Chairman of GKN in 1997 until his retirement in May 2004. He served as a non-executive director of the Bank of England from 1991 to 1999 and as Chairman of Courtaulds plc from 1996 to 1998. He is currently Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director of QinetiQ Group plc, a director of Royal Opera House, Covent Garden Limited, a member of the Panel on Takeovers and Mergers and is a former Chairman of the Governing Body of Shrewsbury School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and is a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Shropshire. |
